Understanding difference between DVD order and aired order

Hi all

This is super confusing for me but I will try to ask the question so I dont seem stupid.

It seems as though TVDB gives episode information to Sonarr for the Aired order. I understand the whole renaming thing and that if its downloded in another order, it will rename is so that other applications display the correct season information etc.

It gets confusing with something like Futurama. Sonarr is downloading episodes based on the air order, the problem is that nowhere on the net (newsgroups or torrents) does the aired episodes exist, only the DVD releases, so it ends up downloading a load of episodes and then renames them to the aired episode names which do no match the desicription.

A good example is season 2 episode 20 which doesnt wasnt aired but only exists on aired format, but doesnt exist on the tv format.

I have attempted to restrict sonarr to only look for TV releases rather than dvd/bd rips but It seems as though they dont exists out there.

Is there any way to work around this problem?

Thanks all!

For example. Futurama S03E01 Just downloaded. The Actual episode is “War is the H-Word”, but it has been named “The Honking”.

That’s actually interesting. Now I’m going to have to watch all of my episodes again to see if they are correct as per thetvdb.com or not, yay

At a first glance I’d agree that thexem.de’s mapping doesn’t make sense anymore, since the tv releases of the old seasons are kind of hard to get nowadays (and why would you want to). I don’t know, maybe someone with more experience on thexem can chime in…

My thoughts as well, it seems to make sense on an older series to refer to the DVD releases as they are going to be more accurate, and include special episodes etc!

The easiest would be to not let Sonarr post process them and sort them manually (then you could use Sonarr to manage them).

If the mapping thexem.de is causing more issues though it should be removed as it should really match what’s available right now.

That would be the easiest option. Only problem is that there are different episode numbers in total, for example tv aired season 2 has 20 episodes, but dvd release only has 16 episodes. I suppose the easiest thing in this situation is download and sort/rename manually. Mediaportal will grab the correct info from the naming I think.

I think I have figured out the issue (at least with Futurama).

The TVDB listing for the DVD order is wrong.

Season 1 TVDB DVD listing - 9 episodes
Season 1 DVD release - 13 episodes

Season 2 TVDB DVD Listing - 16 episodes
Season 2 DVD Release - 19 episodes.

So the issue is that media portal etc are grabbing information from the wrong source, DVD rips themeslves are correct.

“wrong source” is debatable. For media portal, xbmc (kodi), and others, thetvdb.com is the one source to get information.

I had a closer look, and I see that scene dvdrip releases have 13 episodes in season 1 for Futurama, the same as the physical dvd. thetvdb.com says there’s only 9 episodes in season 1, probably following the original air “seasons” from 1999…

Everyone is using thetvdb as source, so changing the seasons there to reflect the correct number of episodes (as well as the 3 eps that have their order flipped) would be Bad™. It’s been established for a long time now that S01 has only 9 episodes.

So I thexem scene mapping is still correct. It does look weird when you have the physical dvd’s next to your digital collection though…

Yes so its back to square one with people disagreeing how many episodes are season one.

Another factor that is unique to futurama is that different tv companies broadcast different episodes and series in their own order, so there isnt a defacto standard.

I understand thetvdb is the master source, but in this case you can choose DVD release, or aired release on the website, and the DVD releases list doesnt actually match the DVD releases.

It takes us back to the beggining where sonarr is downloading the dvd rip episodes and thetvdb is renaming them based on the aired episode order, which is seemingly random, depending on which broadcaser its going off.

I think this is a one off (apart from maybe American Dad where its debatable about a mid season split).

I have taken to downloading the dvd rips episodes manually and renaming them manually, so far MP is picking up the naming correctly.

Or even better, download them in dvd order, then rename and sort them in their aired order according to tvdb.

I had similar issue, and discussions, with both season of Transporter.
