Still no Unrar support for torrents?

Hi all, first comment on here, and just recently moved over from sickbeard.

I am very impressed with Sonarr so far so big thanks to all that has made the happen, BUT (there’s always a but) a lack of UNRAR support is proving to be a big problem for torrents.

Yes you can set your download client to unrar the file but this creates a problem when using other programs like CouchPotato etc, as the auto unrar will happen for all torrents, even if manually added.
Now if you auto unrar it will always unrar to the download folder not the completed folder and if you set it to a specific folder then all torrents will be unpacked there, which is ok until you have files that do not need to be unpacked and are then stored in the completed folder.
Meaning you cannot point Sonarr to scan in 2 locations, cant we just simplify everything and make Sonarr do the unpacking.

Rutorrent works best by auto moving downloaded torrents to a completed folder usually by a hardlink, then its up to whatever program you use to unrar etc. This also leaves the copy in the download folder free for seeded to your desired settings within your download client.

Its the best way for torrents in my eyes, also i hope not to offend but headphones, sickrage, and i believe sickbeard all had the unrar feature.

I believe this feature is in the process, but im unsure if we will ever see it as the topic has been mentioned time and time again but nothing has ever been implemented.

For now i will only use Usenet as torrents is not quite there yet.

Rarred torrents are a sign of a horrible tracker. Torrents work by graces of people who keep seeding them. Rarring torrents means that you’ll either have to keep both the rarred and the unrarred version of the file, or (and this is more likely) you’ll just stop seeding. I don’t know if the devs want to support unrarring at some point but from a filesharing point of view I hope they don’t.

More practical for now: there are only a few groups who upload rarred torrents to KAT (to name an example). When I still used it I simply blacklisted one or two combinations of words and I never got any rarred torrents anymore.

unrar is on the roadmap, it just isn’t a priority.

That’s not necessary the case I’ve used both Deluge and transmission and with both I can control in the finish script if i want to extract according to the label.

But I agree with @NMe is horrible, I’ve seen in their forums the most idiotic responses by admins when asked by their users to stop doing rar torrents.

I agree with you all regarding unrar (it’s a pain in the arse), but the fact of the matter is that unrar files still exist and to be honest they are few and far between.

This program is meant to make the whole download process a breeze isn’t it? If so unrar support is vital for the use of torrents regardless of whether or not they are good for filesharing.

Also I mean all this in the nicest way possible and I hope not to offend.

As I said before I will continue only with Usenet as torrents is still unreliable.

Well, apparently unrar support is on the radar, it’s just not going to be done anytime soon while there is more important stuff to tackle. In the mean time just filter words like “www.speed.cd” and you won’t get any rarred content in the first place. I don’t think I’ve seen any rarred content that was not recognizable (and therefore blockable) by strings like that.

Thanks for the advice.

i still get them all the time, support should be there. couchpotato and sickbeard/sickrage have it

yeah i just moved from sickrage due to lots of recent issues and the whole split. I’m loving sonarr it is a great program and everything works beautifully but yeah i regularly get rars. don’t particularly like them but sometimes they are the fastest i have. i am manually doing them for now but am looking at other options as this is nearly essential to me.

I have a different request. Is it possible to get sonarr to simply ignore rar’d torrents altogether?

No, Sonarr has no way of knowing the contents are RARed before the download completes.

Hm. It’s a kludge but maybe a setting that would tell Sonarr to delete the download upon discovering it’s RARed and try again. Right now that’s what happens anyway except it’s me doing the discovery, deleting, and retrying with my hands.

Or perhaps there’s another way, that I’m missing, to configure Sonarr to deal with this so I don’t have to?

If you already have it why delete it and look for another? Just unrar it.

We have no plans to support automatically deleting it because it’s RARed.

Because I don’t want to be manually involved. I don’t want to KNOW there’s RARed files in the completed folder. I just want the content delivered up automagically via sonarr and plex. If I were willing to jump in a terminal, navigate to the folder, discover the reason why sonarr thinks it’s done but I still don’t have my content, and then unrar and mv, I might as well be pulling stuff manually like I used to. No offense but it’s rather annoying to think I’ve got the latest episode of my favorite show waiting for me only for there to be some puzzle I need to solve before finding out, oh I still need to serve the keyboard gods before I can enjoy my popcorn. If it’s “easy” for me to unrar I’m betting it’s just as easy for Computer to do the unraring for me or dump the files and try again.

it not up to sonarr to unrar anything for nzbs, why should it be up to sonnar to unrar torrents, find a postprocessing script for your torrent downloader of choice that unrars for you…

How about having an option in sonarr to ignore rar’d torrent releases instead?

What i really dont understand is the devs hostility towards rared files?

I mean this in the nicest way possible but if you all spent the same time that you do against the implementation unrar support, it would have been implemented by now?

I dont get it, sadly unrar is clearly part and parcel of the downloading world.

Why not embrace it and make Sonarr the king of them all

/me is confused why there is so much angst in this thread.

Enough said… i look forward to the update.

Thank you.
