Sonarr v5 Beta
Almost 2 years since Sonarr v4 released, we are ready to announce that the Sonarr v5 beta is launching, and its big! At almost 1000 commits by almost 100 contributors we are ready to open up v5 to users for beta testing.
Competition
To celebrate this milestone we’re launching a community competition, giving our users the chance to be part of Sonarr forever by suggesting your own ICONIC loading message!
Submissions of loading messages are open for 4 weeks, and can be submitted via this Google Form. After submissions are closed our dev team will shortlist our favourite suggestions and then open them up to community voting. The top chosen results will be added to Sonarr in time for the final v5 launch!
Major Changes
There are many changes to both the front end UI as well as the backend system, including some long desired features. As such downgrading back to v4 is not possible unless you restore a v4 backup. Here is a summary of things that are changing:
User Interface
- Completely redesigned UI - A refreshed, more modern interface with improved navigation, layouts, tables, dialogs, and responsive behaviour.
- Improved accessibility - Better keyboard navigation, focus handling, labels, screen-reader support, and accessible controls throughout the application.
- New Statistics page - Get an overview of your library and its contents.
TVDB Metadata
- Language Metadata - Sonarr can now utilize metadata from TVDB in languages other than English. Choose which metadata language you want to use per series
- Series Ordering - Use other series orders on TVDB, eg DVD orders or Streaming orders. This is defined when adding a series to Sonarr.
Search & Releases
- Prevent grabs before airdate - Define whether Sonarr should download releases before its official air date via Release Profiles.
- Improved Interactive Search - More detailed release information and clearer explanations of why releases are accepted or rejected. Results are now virtualized, so no more UI hanginging when there are many results, and an ability to filter them on title.
- Improved season pack handling - Better support for season packs, including the ability to grab season packs before a season has completely aired, and the ability to define when a season pack should replace single episodes.
- Improved multi-season releases - Better handling and matching of releases containing episodes from multiple seasons.
- More powerful Release Profiles - Apply a Release Profile to multiple indexers, giving you more control over where release restrictions and preferences apply.
- Improved release parsing - Better handling of difficult release names, non-ASCII release groups, multi-season releases, multi-episode releases, and many many other edge cases.
- Improved anime searching - search for and parse season aliases, without season numbers and without duplicating season numbers. Only search for anime season packs after a season has aired fully, reducing API hits and improving performance.
Downloads
- Malicious Extensions - prevent torrents containing malicious file extensions from being sent to the download client.
- Queue Grouping - Only show one entry on the activity queue for multi-episode releases.
- Qbittorrent Tagging - Optionally add a series’ tags to qbittorrent when grabbing a release.
Library & Statistics
- Custom Wanted filters - Create filters for Missing and Cutoff Unmet episodes to quickly find exactly what you’re looking for.
- More detailed media information - See information for multiple audio and subtitle streams instead of only a single stream.
- Improved media detection - Updated media probing and FFprobe handling provide more accurate information about files.
Security & Networking
- Basic authentication - Basic auth has been removed for security reasons, forms auth is now the default.
- OIDC authentication - New OIDC auth options.
- Lockout and Password Recovery - too many failed login attempts will now lock Sonarr and require a password reset.
- Improved IPv4/IPv6 connectivity - Better address selection and Happy Eyeballs support for environments using both IPv4 and IPv6.
API & Integrations
- New API v5 - A new API version to work with the different metadata languages and series orders.
- Expanded API functionality - New and updated endpoints expose functionality added throughout Sonarr v5.
Under the Hood
- .NET 10 - we’re making the jump from .NET 6 all the way to .NET 10.
- Modernized frontend - The frontend has been updated with modern tooling, including the move from Webpack to Vite.
- Migration to typescript - the frontend has been fully migrated from Javascript to Typescript.
- Performance and reliability improvements - Hundreds of smaller changes improve database handling, networking, parsing, importing, searching, and overall reliability.
And much more
Sonarr v5 contains hundreds of additional fixes and improvements across indexers, download clients, notifications, metadata, Custom Formats, Quality Profiles, Import Lists, localization, API endpoints, and more.
Still Coming
There are some additional features that are still in progress:
- TMDb Metadata support - An alternative to TheTVDB, use it for all or some of your series.
- A redesigned main page in Sonarr - Will provide a quick overview of things and during initial setup provided a more streamlined setup.
- Further Multi-Season Support - Improved handling of multi-season releases
- Extended malicious file extensions handling - Improved handling of torrents with blocked files - Block downloading of certain files at the client level and still let Sonarr handle treat it as failed (starting with qBit)
How To Upgrade
V5 beta has now been pushed to the develop branch. Updates will happen differently depending on how you have Sonarr installed on your system.
- Docker container providers will update their :develop tag to v5 (Hotio and Linuxserver.io have been informed)
- Native versions for Windows, MacOS and Linux have been published and are available to download from sonarr.tv. They will need to be downloaded and installed manually, updates will not happen via Sonarr.
Make sure to make a backup in v4 first before upgrading to v5 incase anything goes wrong and you need to roll back.
Issues when upgrading
Due to multiple database migrations it can be possible that some corrupt databases that were doing OK in v4 may have broken in v5. We don’t expect this to be as frequent as happened between v3 to v4.
You can try to follow our corrupt database repair guide Useful Tools | Servarr Wiki or reach out to one of our Support channels.
