Sonarr is confusing episode files

Sonarr version (exact version): 2.0.5163
Mono version (if Sonarr is not running on Windows): 5.0.1.1
OS: macOS 10.13.4
Debug logs: Debug logs: https://pastebin.com/khgdLAve
Description of issue: About 3 months ago Sonarr began confusing files it’s identifying current season episodes as being from Season 1.

For example Sonarr is reading S06E14 as being S01E14 - as per screenshot.

This is happening for all series which have multiple seasons and have files added after this time.
Wondering if something changed in a recent update about how Sonarr is reading file names/paths.

Please note that the naming convention is due to iTunes automatic organisation, however Sonarr had been correctly identifying epispdes with this same naming convention until a few months ago - so what’s changed?

In my opinion the issues is your weird naming schema you’re using.
Try to replace “{season}-{episode:00}” with “S{season:00}-E{episode:00}”

Agreed file naming if not helping, this is due to the way that iTunes keeps the files automatically organised (I use for iTunes for viewing my media on AppleTV).

However, does not explain why everything was working fine until a few months ago - with the same naming convention - and now it’s just gone crazy.

You let iTunes rename your files ?
I knew that iTunes could mess up things,
Why not make sure that iTunes doesn’t come near your files and use Kodi on your Apple TV ?

Couldn’t tell you why the first ones did work.
Sorry.

Yes, if you set iTunes to automatically organise your files - it does for TV, Movies and Music.

I like that it keeps a good folder/file structure - almost impossible to misplace a file!

The overhead of managing about 3.6TB of media manually is much more of a pain than a crappy naming convention from iTunes for TV Shows and I have to say that if after 10 years this is the first time that I am having any challenges then it’s been working OK for me.

I am not opposed to looking at new things, I did eventually find my way to Sonarr from SickBeard (which was the original recommendation from a friend) but keeping iTunes away from files it not so easy when you have iPhones and iPad which you use to watch media on the train.

So trying to see how I can get them to play nicely together again first.

So, if I understand correctly: you point sonarr to a directory that holds your sorted media, and you then let iTunes rename those files?
I can’t see that going well. iTunes renames, sonarr periodically rescans the folder, sees some files it doesn’t know about (since they have been renamed), tries to guess what file they are…

If you would replicate the naming convention that iTunes uses in your sonarr media renaming settings, and don’t let iTunes touch that directory (only for reading) that might go better. If sonarr does the renaming, the file is linked in its database to the correct episode.

That’s what I dislike of the apple logic,
They always want to do it on their own way so it’s impossible for other programs to use on a normal way.
Looking at your file names I never seen a file naming that so unlogic,
Removing the series name of the file name?
I never rename my files (only if they are mis tagged) also because I live in a non-native English speaking country we also want to have subs and using the default scene/p2p name makes it easier to find the correct subs.

I got like 5x as much media as you and without my renaming I hardly have to do any managing being that Sonarr makes sure all files are placed in the correct folder structure.
And able to play all media on all my devices. (HTPC, Several Raspberry Pi’s Tablets and phones)

Thanks for your comments.

I have figured out a workaround a short time ago, I have been able to get iTunes to keep the files where they were before but to let me control the naming convention.

Sonnar is still scanning the iTunes Library but not getting confused… still think Sonarr is a bit too rigid in what it wants to see in naming, it also got confused by a couple of episodes which had numbers in the file name, but a little bit of tweaking sorted that.

I made a suggestion a while back about how people could be being able to set your own naming convent for each quality (there is enough space to the right of the size limit sliders to allow a text naming convention/format field for each quality) but I guess nothing is going to come of that.

I am still testing it to make sure that the qualities are always being read by Sonarr correctly - I didn’t have that before so bonus.

Nothing like getting annoyed enough to spend 24 hours trying to figure out a different way to do things.
Time will tell if there is any negative consequences in iTunes from the naming being different.

However I am happy that iTunes and Sonarr are playing nicely again.

That’s the option I suggested in my first reply

Good your issue is solved.

Oh, I knew that naming convention was the preferred option, the challenge was how to stop iTunes from overwriting and imposing naming convention upon your files… and still make sure that it’s keeping the media files in a place which iTunes is happy with for Sync’ing to other devices.

I was able to name the files “S{season:00}-E{episode:00}” and then if I dragged and dropped them into iTunes it would change it “{season}-{episode:00}”.

It comes down to the understanding of these 2 settings… the first one is the problem not the second one though.

When you tick Keep iTunes Media folder organised it keeps the files in folders based on TV Show and Season. The Season, Episode and Name if the file are applied based on what the MetaData in iTunes is set to and it will move the files around the folders and rename the files based on how you update or edit that data in iTunes.

If you untick Keep iTunes Media folder organised it actually still adds the files into folders based on TV Show and Season, but does not impose it’s own file name convention, which that’s not really how it reads (well thats not how I read it anyway). I got the impression it was going to add them into a flat/root media directory with no organisation at all.

I never had any reason to risk completely screwing up entire my Media Library until now since Sonarr was working with it fine until recently.
