[Solved] Sonarr version on Synology

Dear team,
I use Sonarr on my Synology NAS (DSM 6.2.3) and it runs just fine. When I started using Sonarr I installed the Synology version package and as from then I update it from within Sonarr itself (System -> Updates). So now I am running the official version on a Sonology NAS without problems.

As you know, for DSM 6.2.x different Sonarr version numbers are used:

  • Sonarr 20200921-18 for SynoCommunity and for Synology NAS’ses only (?)
  • Sonarr 2.0.0.5344 by Sonarr itself and for Linux, Windows and MacOS.

I think it would be better that Synology’s Sonarr package name refers to the official Sonarr version it is based on so that in case of issues, one can pin point the solution(s) to the Sonarr team as well.

Why is there a Synology version of Sonarr anyway (as far as I know other NAS brands use the Linux version(s) of Sonarr itself)?

thanks for your attention - I will be happy to read your response.

There is no “official version” of a native syno package. It is maintained by synocommunity, not the sonarr devs, and as such they version it the way they want.

The package has a different version since it refers to the scripts and config necessary to install sonarr as a syno package, not the version of sonarr inside the package itself.
As you say yourself, you install some version of the package, and from then on you can update sonarr using sonarr’s built-in updater.

The syno package is more or less an install disc. Once installed, the software will then update itself by downloading newer versions.

As to why a syno package is even needed: it’s synology’s way to install software natively so it shows up and can be managed from the package center etc. It is the linux version of sonarr, but with a wrapper around it.

So it’s actually normal but confusing why there is a difference between the syno package version and sonarr version, because they’re two completely unrelated things.

The syno version also doesn’t match Sonarr’s version because Sonarr can be updated outside of the syno package (using the built in updater) and the syno package itself may not be updated for weeks/months or more frequently to address packaging issues or implement changes to things outside of Sonarr’s control.
