Description of issue:
My downloaded episodes aren’t scanning in anymore. Here, we’re looking at one (of many) files that aren’t scanning in. As you can see, I’ve already ensured that the permissions are wide open (chmod 777), yet Sonarr continues to complain that there are no permissions to access the file.
For context, here’s the relevant portion of my Docker config, showing the version and mappings:
sonarr:
container_name: sonarr
image: lscr.io/linuxserver/sonarr:latest
volumes:
- /share/docker/Sonarr/config:/config
- /share/Download/transmission/complete/sonarr:/data/downloads
- /share/tv:/data/tv
My torrent client mapping in Sonarr is mapped thusly:
/downloads/complete/sonarr → /data/downloads/
Here, I’ve dropped into the container and verified permissions/existence of the file(s) in question:
root@f0c80f43a3a2:/data/downloads# ls -lah Castlevania\ \(2017\)\ Season\ 1\ S01\ \(1080p\ BluRay\ x265\ HEVC\ 10bit\ AAC\ 5.1\ RZeroX\)/

In this example, the show Castlevania is mapped to /data/tv/Castlevania.
I can see we have some files in the directory now, although they’re not organized into season folders;
root@f0c80f43a3a2:/# ls -lah /data/tv/Castlevania
total 13G
drwxrwxrwx+ 3 501 root 12K May 12 04:23 .

-rwxrwxrwx+ 1 501 root 543M Jul 7 2017 Castlevania.S01E01.Witchbottle.mkv
-rwxrwxrwx+ 1 501 root 1.1K May 12 04:23 Castlevania.S01E01.Witchbottle.nfo
-rwxrwxrwx+ 1 501 root 54 Jul 7 2017 Castlevania.S01E01.Witchbottle.nfo-orig
-rwxrwxrwx+ 1 501 root 35K Jul 8 2017 Castlevania.S01E01.Witchbottle.tbn
...
If I try to organize the existing files into season folders in the UI, I get an error:
Failed to rename file /data/tv/Castlevania/Castlevania.S01E01.Witchbottle.mkv: Access to the path '/data/tv/Castlevania' is denied.
I even created the Season 1 folder by hand and gave it full permissions:
root@f0c80f43a3a2:/data/tv/Castlevania# ls -lah Season*
'Season 1':
total 24K
drwxrwxrwx+ 2 501 root 4.0K May 21 10:53 .
drwxrwxrwx+ 7 501 root 12K May 21 10:53 ..
root@f0c80f43a3a2:/data/tv/Castlevania#
Yet, I get the same “permission denied” error.
Furthermore, when I try to run a manual import, the file browser doesn’t see anything in /data/downloads/:
In another example:
Yet, I’m able to copy the file by hand:
root@f0c80f43a3a2:/data/downloads# cp www.UIndex.org\ \ \ \ -\ \ \ \ The.Boys.S05E08.1080p.WEB.H264-SYLiX/the.boys.s05e08.1080p.web.h264-sylix.mkv /data/tv/The\ Boys/Season\ 5/The\ Boys.S05E08.Blood\ and\ Bone.mkv
root@f0c80f43a3a2:/data/downloads# ls -lah /data/tv/The\ Boys/Season\ 5/The\ Boys.S05E08.Blood\ and\ Bone.mkv
-rwxrwx---+ 1 root root 4.5G May 21 10:31 '/data/tv/The Boys/Season 5/The Boys.S05E08.Blood and Bone.mkv'
root@f0c80f43a3a2:/data/downloads#
It’s clear that there’s some sort of permissions issue at play, but I cannot figure out what it is. Presumably, the Sonarr service is running with a different uid (it appears to be user abc with uid 911?), which might explain things… but even still, with full 777 permissions on all source/target files/folders, I would expect things to be working properly.
I even tried changing the user/group to abc:abc:
root@f0c80f43a3a2:/# chown -R abc:abc /data/tv/The\ Boys/
root@f0c80f43a3a2:/# chown -R abc:abc /data/downloads/www.UIndex.org\ \ \ \ -\ \ \ \ The.Boys.S05E08.1080p.WEB.H264-SYLiX/
root@f0c80f43a3a2:/# ls -lah /data/downloads/www.UIndex.org\ \ \ \ -\ \ \ \ The.Boys.S05E08.1080p.WEB.H264-SYLiX/

root@f0c80f43a3a2:/#
but it still throws a permissions error:
2026-05-21 11:06:02.7|Error|DownloadedEpisodesImportService|Import failed, path does not exist or is not accessible by Sonarr: /data/downloads/www.UIndex.org - The.Boys.S05E08.1080p.WEB.H264-SYLiX. Ensure the path exists and the user running Sonarr has the correct permissions to access this file/folder
Update:
I think I found the issue… It looks like it might have been a permissions issue: Transmission was configured to use uid 1001, which is likely what was causing the permission denied error. I’ve updated Transmission to use 911, as well as created a new user on my QNAP server with a uid and gid of 911, then assigned that user to permissions on all affected folders. It looks like the issue might be resolved now.
Final update:
That was the issue. Case closed.
