Profile cutoff and quality clarification

Hi there

I have read most of the posts regarding questions on profiles and cutoffs, but still have some questions. I also included a screenshot of a profile and would love to hear feedback on how Sonarr would interpret it.

thank you

Here is some background/thoughts, if it helps:

Is the cutoff based on the location of the quality in the list or based on the actual quality (e.g. HDTV-1080p being better quality than SDTV).

All of my size minimums and limits are the same for all qualities under Quality Definitions. Does the order of the quality list under Quality Definitions go from lowest to highest quality?

My questions below are based on the notion that the order of the quality list under Quality Definitions does go from lowest to highest quality.

Below is based on examples at https://github.com/Sonarr/Sonarr/wiki/Profiles

  1. In scenario 3 of the SDTV example, will Sonarr stop looking for files because DVD was higher in the list or because DVD is a higher quality? or both?

  2. Further to the above question, in the HDTV 720p example: If Bluray 720p is grabbed first and minutes later a WEBDL 720p is released, will Sonarr grab WEBDL 720p because it is the cutoff even though a lower quality and/or lower on the list?

My own scenario/question:

Allowed:
WEBDL 720p
Bluray 720p
HDTV 720p

Cutoff:
WEBDL 720p

Bluray 720p is found first and grabbed. Minutes later, WEBDL 720p is released. Will Sonarr grab WEBDL 720p b/c it is the cutoff and/or above Bluray 720p in the list, even though Bluray 720p is (presumably) a better quality?

thank you!

It’s irrelevant, the order that matters is defined in the profile.

Higher in the list (the help text in the profile edit view, below the qualities mentions that higher means better).

No, the cutoff is met already (either that exact quality or higher quality).

It will grab it because the cutoff hasn’t been met as it’s higher in the list than the quality already grabbed.

Bottom line:

  • Higher = more preferred (you could put SDTV at the top and it would be the quality Sonarr would prefer)
  • Cutoff prevents other qualities from being downloaded if the quality is equal or better (higher) than the cutoff.

Thank you so much!

Just to confirm, in your third response, when you say “higher quality”, you’re referring to higher on the list, correct?

I relation to my setup which I uploaded, would that mean it would grab the first highest (in list) release and stop all together because SDTV is lowest on list and is also the cutoff? Even if it downloads DVD first, it won’t later grab something above DVD, once released?

Yes, higher in the list.

Yes, that’s correct.

Yes, because DVD exceeds the cutoff.

Awesome! Thanks again
