Monitored series not actually monitored or downloading

Over the past six months some shows have spontaneously been displaying grey (not monitored) in the calendar, it seems to be happening to more shows over time.

Going into “edit series” monitored status is actually set to Yes for all of them. Toggling monitored status has no effect.

Any idea what could be causing the problem and how to troubleshoot it?
