Look for better quality after downloading lower quality

Sonarr version (exact version): 2.0.0.5338
Mono version (if Sonarr is not running on Windows):5.20.1.34
OS: Unraid 6.7.2
Debug logs:
Description of issue:
I’ve got a show set up to download only profile type 1080p. However these sometimes show out later so I manually searched for & downloaded a 720p version.
Is there a way to have Sonarr continue to watch for the higher level profile?

It already does that via the profile you’ve setup, Sonarr will keep watching for a release until the cutoff is met or exceeded (equal to or higher in the list of qualities).

So even though it’s dropped off of the “wanted” tab Sonarr is still looking for it?
Thanks.

not if the monitored flag has been turned off

if its hollow, like the one circled red in the image above, it wont keep looking, if its solid then it will

It is solid. I was confused because it dropped off of the “wanted” list.
Thanks

There ware two wanted lists, missing and cutoff unmet. Missing means there isn’t a file on disk for that episode and cutoffumet means there is an episode file, but that file doesn’t meet or exceed the cutoff.

A monitored episode won’t be grabbed if the cutoff has been met.

OK, but the episode in question isn’t on either “wanted” list.
I guess I can manually check my indexer periodically until the higher quality file shows up and then see if Sonarr grabs it.

So I clearly have something set up wrong. Here are some screen shots showing:

  1. The episode currently with a 720p version downloaded and the box blacked out to show it is to be monitored.
  2. the setup for the show indicating the profile is HD-1080p
  3. the HD-1080p profile
  4. a manual search of the episode that shows that the episode is now available but a note in the status that says “existing file already meets cutoff”.
What have I done wrong here?

WEBDL-720p doesn’t seem to be included in your wanted list at all any longer, which probably makes it unable to know if it should replace it.

720p is not in my wanted list. I only want sonarr to pull 1080p. I grabbed the 720p as a temporary file. How is it looking at a 720p file and saying that it exceeds my cutoff when my cutoff is 1080p?
I’m very confused.

As I said, it doesn’t know that you prefer other versions over the one you have when you don’t tell it. Try adding WEBDL-720p to the bottom of the list.

But I told it I prefer 1080p (not just prefer, but only want 1080p). That’s the profile I’ve selected for the series. Its in the second image.
And further, the message in the fourth image doesn’t say “I don’t know what 720p is so I guess you’re on your own.” is says the existing file meets or exceeds the cutoff.

That being said I did look at the details in the profile and noticed that webdl-720p is listed above hdtv-1080p (but it is below webdl1080p, which is what I want). I’ve reordered the 720p to be below the 1080p options but still left it unchecked because I don’t want Sonarr to pull those.
Are you saying that I have to select 720p in my 1080p profile so that Sonarr will “know” that 720p is lower than what I want?

720p is just a text string. Sonarr doesn’t know what you prefer until it is given a list which tells it. When it’s unchecked it probably doesn’t include it in the known order list. Wouldn’t it be easier to try to enable it instead of discussing it here for so long?

I’m not sure how to read the screenshot of your profiles in v2 anymore, this would have been easier with a screenshot of the details of the profile when you click on it, but from skimming the thread:

Hdtv-1080p is the cutoff.
You put 720p above hdtv-1080p, telling sonarr it is better than hdtv-1080p.
You downloaded a 720p file.

So sonarr is doing what you told it to do.

Selecting/deselecting the quality in the profile is not applicable in the sense that it doesn’t mean “I want this quality” when you manually import a file you got from somewhere else. Sonarr will import it, check the quality, see it’s 720p which you told it is “better” than your cutoff quality… So sonarr’s work is done. It has a file which meets or exceeds your cutoff.

If you want a profile where you import files manually with qualities you ultimately don’t want, put them all below your cutoff quality.

Edit for completeness: don’t enable those qualities either, or sonarr will download them and keep downloading better and better files until the cutoff is met.

Thirrian, thanks I think you got it. But just to clarify I didn’t change the profile. It is the default as installed. And, it only had webdl720p above hdtv1080p.
Anyway, I reordered them and we’ll see what happens next week.
In the mean time I have one other series where the amzn webdl hasn’t shown up yet & I’ve manually downloaded the 720p version. The series is correctly listed in the unmet wanted list. So I think it was just that weird order in the profile.
Thanks again.
