How is the quality of a show determined by Sonaar

Hi,
I’m new to Sonarr having come over from SickBeard and have been looking at the profiles section. It seem straight forward enough, you add a list of resolutions you’d accept and nominate one that’s a “keeper”, if you get the keeper then no further attempts will be made on that TV episode. My keeper is WEBDL-1080p
So here’s the thing, I have some 1080p episodes gathered by SB, they’re definitely 1080p according to the metadata and confirmed by a few players. However Sonarr is showing them as being HDTV-720p (based on the tag in the series listing page) and has gone off and tried downloading something of higher quality, or so it thinks. What’s happened is I’ve now had a load of WEB-DL-1080p files replaced by Sonarr with WEBDL-720p, initial file sizes might have been around the 2.2Gb size and have now been replaced by files around 1 to 1.5Gb.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what is going on?
I’m assuming the “Quality Definitions” have nothing to do with this, these setting are just for what you’ll accept in terms of size based on what a file is advertising itself as being.

Its determined by the file name, first checking for identifiers (WEBDL, HDTV and Bluray) and the resolution (720p, 1080p, 2160p), if information is missing the file extension is used and .mkv defaults to HDTV-720p. Size is not used when determining the quality.

You should have SB add the quality to the file name (since it knows what the quality of the files are already) and then import them into Sonarr. If you want to fix it manually you can update the episodes in Sonarr (at the episode, season or series level) to set the quality to what Sonarr should treat them as.

Thanks Markus101, that’s explains it fully. The renaming scheme I used in SB and have applied to Sonarr is of the form “Series Name - SXXEXX”.ext I have no info in the file name WRT quality.
This just leads me to one more question if you don’t mind. Since I strip out the quality in the renaming, if this is done by Sonarr will Sonarr still retain the quality information so it doesn’t keep going back to find a “better” quality or will it do that as it will use the default HDTV-720p tag? I guess what I’m asking is does Sonarr retain the information about the episode quality somewhere before the renaming. If this is not the case then it seems essential to keep the quality in the name (which would be a pain for me:)

Sonarr keeps track of the quality, but we still recommend including it in the file name in case you need to rebuild the database for some reason.

Thanks again Marcus101, much clearer now.
