Add IMDB, TVMaze, TMDB, for grabbing show information

I would like to have the ability to choose between IMDB, VDB, TVMaze, TMDB in Sonarr to grab show information, or be able to select all four and choose the their order. Would also be great to have when adding a show the ability to select which service to grab the shows information from. See below linked thread.

Who’s paying for IMDB access?

We’re evaluating other options though.

Why am I not surprised by that with them. The worse site out of all of the and they want to be paid.

I have a program called Rename My Tv Series and in settings one can choose TMDB,TVMaze, and TVDB. In the last 6 months or so every time TVDB is checked and RMTV has issues. TVMaze and TMDB work perfectly.

 all,

+1 for TMDB, and my reasoning

@markus101 if there is/are reasons why we’re even bothering with the alts at this point then I’d love to know…?

Hope this helps!

Trakt just used TMDb (previously they used TheTVDB). We used Trakt more than 10 years ago, but never again.

I’ve said it before elsewhere, but TMDb is not better than TheTVDB, it’s different, sometimes it’s better for a show, sometimes it’s worse. TMDb is missing data that Sonarr relies on (that they have no plans to add), so even if we use TMDb there will be some information that needs to be sourced elsewhere or the calendar will be a mess.

Switching to another source doesn’t make sense (we watched how poorly that went with Trakt before), the direction we’re evaluating is supporting multiple metadata sources.

Might want to talk to the Emby and Jellyfin developers.

Talk to them about what?

I assume it is an insult saying since they managed to, you should manage to as well.

On another note, I would like to add to this feature request. TVDB is horrible to contribute to. I have seen this issue brought up before, but I have not seen people try to solve it on their own so I wanted to provide my own account. I wanted to add the new Gumball series to my library. This should be simple, but just like they did with Dr. Who, TVDB decided that the word of the producers and the wiki and the trailers etc are wrong, and decided instead to add it in the DB as Season 7. This makes it wholly incompatible with Jellyfin, Seerr, and every tracker out there. I have yet to find any release anywhere calling it a Season 7.

I tried to solve this, by contributing to TVDB. I tried adding the new series as its own page. The issue is that to do so, you must link other sources, including another metadata provider (I believe it was IMDB). This was not allowed when I tried to do so, because it was already taken by “Season 7” in the original series. I can also not remove it, obviously, so I opened an issue. It has gone ignored since then.

I understand that you have features that rely on data only TVDB provides, but for some of us, a calendar is completely worthless compared to having a working library and a stack that works together, and the only thing in my stack having problems, repeatedly due to TVDB, is sonarr.

I am sure TVDB is important, but I am sure a lot of us, if given the option a lot of us would still choose TMDB. And that is all we are asking for, the option.

[…] the direction we’re evaluating is supporting multiple metadata sources.

My inference is options is still on the table

There are obviously pros and cons with each meta source so perhaps this thread is a good place to document those

Aside it seems sensible to not be solely dependent on one meta source - readarr and lidarr suffered because of this of late

Maybe, they did delete their first response claiming that TMDb is better than TheTVDB. Regardless, for those platforms it’d be non-destructive, worse case they’d have the wrong metadata, for Sonarr linking to the wrong series could result in files being replaced entirely.

Jellyfin doesn’t support multiple metadata providers?
I know Seerr was working on TVDB support, which I assume was part of the Seerr release.

It goes beyond the calendar, that’s just the obvious visual representation of it.

Well nothing is locked in, but forcing everyone to migrate from one source to another doesn’t make sense, multiple sources is really the only thing that makes sense.

Not sure they’re really that important, TMDb not having air time information isn’t that big of a deal if we can source it elsewhere, it proves that a single source won’t include all the information that Sonarr needs.

Really? About the fact that in both I can avoid TVDB entirely and not have any issues with the correct metadata being found and imported with maybe 6 or 7 hows having to be corrected.

You do realize assuming only makes you look bad, right. That said you for the most part made my point, so thanks. I too have recently gone into TVDB because a upcoming show TMDB, TVMaze, AND IMDB has had for weeks TVDB didn’t have at all. I used the information the three services had to add the show to TVDB only to have it removed within a week. That is just wrong in my book.

Yes, really, it wasn’t clear what information we’d gain from that, but given their needs vs Sonarr there wouldn’t really be a benefit.

No more then suggesting we talk to other projects that also consume metadata.

Not even remotely true and you damn well know it.
