Slight change to Pushbullet

Hi, any chance you could change the Pushbullet notification, change the title to “NzbDrone - Episode Grabbed” or “NzbDrone - Episode Downloaded” and leave the subject as is in the message field. This way it would conform with other apps, Couchpotato and Headphones which have their name in the title

This has changed in develop.

I see this has been added to the latest update, thanks

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Your conformity has now made it look like crap! Not only has this now made the Title too long to show fully (which defeats the purpose of a notification) it also looks like crap. Either remove the App name from PushBullet (or them all) or have it as a toggle to either include it or not. There’s absolutely no reason to see the name of the app that is pushing the notification.

The name needs to be in the title. Couchpotato, Headphones and lots of IFTTT recipes are putting the name in the title. This is the only software that didn’t conform to the standard.

This looks perfect IMO

Yeah, if all you’re doing is viewing your notifications on their website with a shit load of other ones with it you can see all the info at once… I’m referring to Mobile Notifications (the entire point of these). With the inclusion of the Apps name it then cuts off the rest of the Title thus I have no idea if it’s been grabbed, downloaded or upgraded… Again, defeating the entire purpose of simplicity and brevity above all else with these notifications. Including the name (although does conform when looking at a TON of other updates in one single screen such as on their website does look more uniform) it does not convey any pertinent or useful information.

Also, that looks like complete mess to me… There’s absolutely no need for the title to include the name of the app.

Movie Downloaded
Oculus (720p)

Looks a lot better than:

CouchPotato
Downloaded Oculus (720p)

Not only does CouchPotato not tell you anything in the header it wastes valuable space for just it’s name… I know CouchPotato is what downloads my movies (I’m the one who told it too…)

@Kallaide - yeah, I was torn on it, ultimately I’d like to make the title and message body customizable instead of static. How is the title too long now? (where?)

@PogMoThoin that actually looks awful in my opinion, SAB/CP use their name only in the title and IFTTT loads it up.

Ideally PusbBullet would add support for a logo and possibly the source, both Pushover and Pushalot support logos (Pushalot adds the source as well).

I’ll take a screencap with my HTC One to show issue as it is now.

Okay, looks like it just cuts off anything after 24 characters for the title.

NzbDrone - Episode Downl…
The Legend of Korra - 3x08 - The Terror Wit…

Where as before it just used to be (I think):

Episode Downloaded
The Legend of Korra - 3x08 - The Terror Wit…

And yeah I’ve totally been waiting for the custom notifications

Would love to see it like this:

Episode 8 Downloaded:
The Legend of Korra - Season 3

Sabnzb is a custom recipe I created myself using the email notifications and IFTTT. To me the title should always be just that, a title, like the subject in an email. The message should always be on the second line and this change does not make any change the second line, just the title.

The reason for the name in the title is that NzbDrone, Couchpotato and Headphones give two notifications, one on snatch, the other on post process, and as you know neither download any files. This is done by Sabnzb which can also give two, download complete and download failed therefore you soon end up needing the name in the title to instantly see what it is.

I’m a bit of a nutcase when it comes to stuff that looks ugly myself, but I can’t say “NzbDrone - Episode Downl…” bothers me to be honest. As far as I’m concerned the app name can go (and it could do so for CouchPotato as well) but I don’t care much if it stays either, my mind can finish the word “downloaded” just fine.

Besides, it’s only the notification in Android itself that tells you you’ve got a push message that is affected. If you tap it, you’ll open the actual app and see the full text.

Considering the message gets across and this conforms to other often used apps, I’d say keep it as it is. Just my two cents.

PogMoThoin, by you’re example then in Gmail an emails Subject line should have Gmail - appended to the front of it or Outlook - depending on who sent the email…

I understand why you want it different with getting so many updates. I can’t fathom why you would want to see multiple downloaded posts (from both nzbDrone and SAB) but you’re probably the except from the many.

As for NMe, the whole point of notifications is to NOT have to open a program to view the notification

That gmail analogy wouldn’t be right, the title is like the email header, tells you who it’s from, the subject line is the message.

Lots of mine and my family downloads, books, games etc don’t come from an app like Couchpotato, Headphones etc, they get added manually so I like Sabnzbd to notify me when they done so I know how my queue is progressing. I have a slow download speed so want to get stuff quickly before DMCA

I’m with Kallaide on this one. On iOS, the notification pops up but all I see is “nzbdrone - Episode Downloaded”. I have to unlock the phone and open the app to see what was actually grabbed or downloaded.

Ideally I’d prefer the title to be something like “Bates Motel Grabbed”, as that way you see at a glance what’s going on. “Bates Motel S02E15 Grabbed”, even better, if there’s room. Like Kallaide said, I know it’s nzbdrone doing the grabbing so I don’t need to see that, and “Episode Grabbed” or “Episode Downloaded” is too generic as far as useful info goes.

Up until recently I’ve been using Prowl for notifications, which does give the useful info first up, so I’ll have to go back to that for now. I’d rather use Pushbullet though

EDIT: Alternatively, is it feasible to make the notification display user configurable?

Yeah, its something we’ll likely do and has been on Trello for a while: https://trello.com/c/JEFuCAVp/490-templates-for-notifications-connections Some good feedback coming out of this thread, which will help steer the implementation.

Still not sure on the direction to take the actual templates, it can either be done like we do for custom naming (in app fields), or look at external templates, which may give more power at the cost of setup ease. Thoughts?

Nice

I’d be fine with it being like the custom naming. That would cover the majority of naming configurations you’d think. Really it’s just changing the order of the current words around, so you could even get a bit fancy and have drag and droppable options or something

There must be a difference in the way iOS and Android handle notifications and therefore Pushbullet. Android notifications flash up the title, but you have to swipe down and then see the private message field but can read it without having to tap the notification. It is not shortened or abbreviated on my stock Nexus 5. As I leave my phone on my desk I certainly wouldn’t be happy with notifications visible on the lock screen, the title is fine

You don’t need to. Maybe I’m crazy but when I see “Episode Downl…” I really don’t need to open the application to read the full message. And the only thing I’m actually interested in is the line below it telling me what it downloaded anyway.

Very true and you’re right I don’t need to open it to understand what it’s saying.

For me it’s an issue of design that nzbDrone (and Google) are attempting to follow in their products. Brevity and cleanliness above all else. Markus101 has done an amazing job so far keeping nzbDrone clean and tidy without adding too much extra crap that clogs things up in nzbDrone. Although the addition of 'nzbDrone - ’ to the notification doesn’t impede my ability to read it completely, it does break away from the core design focus of keeping things clean and not showing useless information.

As it is, I can live with it since I know he’s working (or will be) on customization of notifications which will allow us all to get the best we can out of it. Until then, I still think it looks ugly and adds useless data to something that should be short and to the point.

Just thought I’d give this a quick bump if that’s OK.

This issue annoys me daily though I’ve learned to live with it for the most part, however a new user I’ve referred just brought up the same issue so I figured I’d bring it back up with you guys to see if there’s any chance of either getting the user configurable version bumped up in priority, or even better just changing the default back to what it originally was with the episode title showing first. I’m just going to come out and say that while the original poster may have wanted it to fall in line with similar apps, it’s just really user unfriendly and was a bad idea ;D

A notification is there to notify you. Being notified that Sonarr has grabbed something isn’t what I’m interested in, I want to know exactly what it’s grabbed at one quick glance. I assume the vast majority of people are on the same page with that one.
