Not sure if it’s what you’re asking, but the options for metadata create a file (containing metadata) which basically holds information about the episodes you’ve downloaded that a program can use to display that information for you. Things such as show, episode, description, year, rating, etc…
Each option for metadata creates a metadata file for each show/episode that is in the format that particular program is expecting. So if you use one of the supported programs listed in the metadata options, set it up, and it will create a file that program can read.
That’s great! Thanks @NoxMetus .
This file will also contains images (banner, poster, link, …) ? Can, for example, Kodi uses this media ?
For the moment, Sonarr generates it own set of pictures. Same for XBMC.
I’m looking for a way to just have one.
Sonarr downloads/creates images for its own usage only, you’re not going to be able to eliminate that or the images required for Kodi. Sonarr can create the metadata files required for Kodi if you enable it.
I think Kodi won’t overwrite existing banner.jpg fanart.jpg poster.jpg files if they are available in the series folder. Not sure about that though, but if it is indeed the case, it might be an option to duplicate the files in the MediaCover directory to the series folder.
And Sonarr creates picture in the Show folder ? or only in it own folder ?
Finally this meta data will help Kodi to recognize a new show if you already did the work on Sonar, to avoid to redo the link on Kodi side right ?
If it’s right, thanks it’s a nice idea but is Kodi removing this file after scanning ? Do I need to activate something to be sure Kodi will read this first ?
In its own folder, MediaCover. On WIndows I believe it’s somewhere in Appdata, on my Synology it’s /usr/local/nzbdrone/var/.config/NzbDrone/MediaCover/
Not really, it won’t try and fetch the additional information through one of the scrapers as it finds a local metadata file.
Oh. But it would be nice that, when we choose the good show in Sonarr (because sometimes it’s not automatic : Castle, Hawaii Five-0, …) to add it id (tvdb id ?) in that metadata file.
The we can wish that Kodi will used it before asking : “I can’t found the show, please help me.” or “I can’t find the perfect matching, so I picked the first one.”.
Kodi will use the information written in the tvshow.nfo file and the images to display it in the UI, it will stop it from connecting to TheTVDB to find the series and get the information on its own.
Assuming tvshow.nfo is used (series metadata) then this is exactly what it does.
Ok Thanks markus101 !
Hello all,
I’ve recently switched from Sickrage over to Sonarr and I haven’t looked back. The only thing I’ve noticed is that with the metadata there’s no option for Mede8er. I own two MED1000X3D’s and I’m wondering if any of the existing ones will work for me. Can I use Kodi, Roksbox or WDTV metadata with my Mede8er?. Any advise would be the bomb. Thanks.

Well it seems I’ve stumbled onto something that seems to cure my problem. It seems I may need to hold on to SickRage after all since it has metadata support for Mede8er. For those that don’t know, Mede8er happens to make some of the best multimedia players around. It was an easy choice for me in comparison to most of the mainstream devices on the market today. That’s why I bought two.
Anyway back to my solution…Since Sonarr seems to blow SickRage out of the water with it’s stability and ability to find my shows in a timely manner I’ve decided to make it my primary grabber. SickRage on the other hand has more flexibility when it comes to some categories (ex. renaming, metadata, search settings, notifications, bulk processing options and better episode management) compared to Sonarr, so I’ve decided to use SickRage as my secondary backup. In other words I’ll use SickRage to re-process my folders/files behind Sonarr. I couldn’t be more satisfied with this one two punch!
Problem solved!
