Please rename subtitles when upgrade episode is downloaded

It’s nice that when you delete an episode, all extra files for that episode now also get deleted. But it’s a real PITA to have subtitles deleted if an episode is only replaced with a better quality version.

Could it please be changed so that when a better quality episode is downloaded, any existing subtitles (and possibly other extras for that episode), just get renamed?

That would save me a load of back and forth to my recycle bin folder to restore/rename said removed subtitles/extra’s

Couldn’t different releases have different subtitles that match the release (whether they come with them or not)?

Not quite sure what you mean. I have Sonarr configured to rename files when it moves them into their respective season folders. So the only thing that would change in the name is the quality indication and possibly release group (which personally I could care less about). But since it’s still the same episode a ‘different’ subtitle that exactly matches with the updated version (which would mostly be a match just on quality and release group) I would hardly expect it to be truly different. The main difference, if any, would likely be minor time sync differences.

At any rate, it would be a whole lot easier than having to redownload subtitles (either manually using something like FileBot or automatically in Plex) only to find out that they are the exact same subtitles previously downloaded.

The main difference, if any, would likely be minor time sync differences.

Is that just a guess or is that based on experience?
Coz I can tell you from personal experience, there are major sync issues between releases. Often different bluray releases are indeed in sync, but between hdtv, webdl, bluray, you’ll have major sync issues.

So far it’s based on experience. I’ve only come across one series so far where there was more than a 1 second sync mismatch in either direction between hdtv and webdl (which is what I download with webdl being the cutoff). Since quality of subtitles often leave much to be desired anyway I don’t mind resyncing the occasional subtitle. Most times for me that is preferable since with new episodes there often is no webdl subtitle release while there is a hdtv release. So that means that most times (for me) it ends up in the same subtitle being re-downloaded.
