OSX networking help

This is more OSX help than nzbdrone, but wanted to get some help from fellow OSX users who are possibly running a similar setup or maybe have some suggestions for me.
Right now, iMac on 10.9.2 running NzBDrone, sabnzb, couchpotato, etc. I watch my videos on a wdtv live + with an external drive hooked up to the wdtv in the living room. The wdtv was wireless, but is now hard wired.
The problem I’m having is my external drive shows up sometimes with it’s proper name, other times with another name (8B40BB8ES******). Then sometimes it remounts and has one of the names with a -1 on the end. What are you guys doing for networked drives like that. The wdtv rarely gets turned off and when everything is connected right, it works great. NzbDrone sends the nzb to sab, sab downloads it, it gets unpacked and drone sends it over to the external drive. I’m just not sure if there is a better way to do this, maybe a new media player. I’ve tried streaming to the wdtv, but it gets sketchy and when you’re trying to watch a movie and the shit is skipping or freezing, it just takes away from it, so I’d really prefer to keep the wdtv with the drive. I also like the wdtv because I can’t remember a file the thing hasn’t been able to play.

As far as mounting the drive goes. I’ve tried adding it to startup, either name, I’ve tried accessing it, then starting up nzbdrone. Half the time it says I can’t access the wdtv.

So yeah, let me know what suggestions you have. I do have a windows machine that I’m planning on setting up a media center, nzb download, etc, once our spare bedroom is remodeled. Wondering if it would just be easier to get that going now and have it running in the corner, just for stress reasons because this is so irritating, haha. I’m thinking it’s the wdtv that’s causing so much headache at this point…
