ND-134 Customize Quality Order

I just wanted to bring back this discussion topic, since the one linked on youtrack is not valid anymore, new forums and what not.

I just had a look over my quality profiles as i modified a few things around the few HD shows i have and i realized that none of them are working the way i want them to.
here’s the thing:
for sd quality, i basically have set up a profile “DVD”, that includes the qualities sdtv, webdl 480 and dvdrip with dvdrip as the cut-off and it works quite well, it grabs sdtv just minutes after the episode airs for immediate availability, webdl is hardly ever available, but if it were, it would come around a little later and the dvdrip would come up months later, after a season finished, the qualities are sorted accordingly, from fastest availability and lowest quality towards the other way around, best quality, but latest availability.
if i want to achieve the same thing for hd material, i would set the lowest desired quality to be hdtv 720, then webdl 720, then bluray 720, with bluray being the cutoff thinking that it would do the same thing, however, it just doesn’t, many of my episodes are hdtv 720 and nzbdrone’s search history tells me “Existing Quality Is Equal Or Better”.

given that i would disagree with that, i wonder what makes nzbdrone think they are equal. bluray rips sure are bigger in file size, implying their quality is better, also, for quite a few shows, their home media releases are uncensored in contrast to the broadcast tv version, making the content better, and given that there are no network logos, parental guideline logos and on-screen ads for other shows makes each frame better and home media requires no ad break cuts, include full intro and outro and most of the time all episodes of a season are normalized, i.e. their volume is consistent.

all these factors are what makes bluray releases way more desirable for me over hdtv rips. i’d even go as far as saying, i’d rather have a good old sd dvdrip than an hdtv 720 rip, which is where this youtrack issue comes in. it would be great to be able to sort qualities on personal preference, allowing each user to decide for themselves, what they prefer:

  • i would want that 720 releases are valued by my subjective quality standards and not treated equally
  • i would take a dvdrip over any higher resolution, if that higher resolution’s release was tv
  • some might want to grab the first available release but in the end save disk space and replace them with a “lower quality”
  • some might say, webdl has better sound quality than dvd or bluray releases
  • others might say that a 720 bluray is still better than 1080 webdl

point is, everybody’s got different taste and preferences in what quality they want to watch, which is why we have the quality profiles in the first place, now it would be great to really be able to customize them.

Existing Quality Is Equal Or Better - that should be pretty accurate, though its possible its incorrect (there was a point in time when it was bugged, but that was fixed months ago).

We haven’t made much headway towards customizable order, but we have discussed it and its something we want to do once we have a stable release of the next version out the door. It may not come right away, but its not going to come before that point due to how much we’re changing.
