Hi,
On the Github page it says that “Nzbdrone vNext” would also have support for Linux and OSX.
As my server runs on Linux I found that quite interesting. Unfortunally it seems that while Nzbdrone 2 has now launched, there is still no linux version.
My quiestion here is quite simple, is Linux still in the plan, or was this dropped? It looks to me like the new version was also developed in .Net, which does not look positive for a Linux version but…
Any info on a potential linux version would be greatly appriciated, cause i’m bloody tired of Sickbeard
Linux support is defiantly not dropped. Its actually almost there. We just need to fix some broken test. Please pm me or @markus101 if you want to help us with the Linux testing.
Also, we never had plans to change the backend away from .Net, the plan was always to use mono on the Linux side. NzbDrone targets .Net 4.0 and we’ve worked hard to use features that work with the comparable version of mono.
mono on linux is not very different from php or other languages, its not baked into the OS, but neither are those frameworks.
Was the reason behind also including Linux support purely a User request or was it also for yourselves i would assume at least one of you have a Home Server as a fair few users of nzbdrone do (including myself)
Currently I am running Nzbdrone on that server because it is a Windows Home Server 2011 and being until now a windows only Software i was contemplating what to do with my server as i am in the process of re-designing from scratch and one of the major changes was going to be trying a Linux Distro over my Windows Setup
I was afraid if i wanted to do this i would have to run sickbeard instead
I am curious how many people who use NzbDrone run servers and have Nzbdrone setup on them rather than their main workstation PC and if so they would obviously be running Windows but once the linux version is released i wonder if they would change from Windows to Linux
@protocol77 I think a number of people run on servers, I know @kayone and I do, its definitely becoming more common place, even my parents have a server now (old desktop convert, same as me), typically I upgrade my desktop and push the old hardware down to my sever, since I’m upgrading out of the want, not need.
We wanted to support linux because of a small number of users asking for it, but also because thats been a big knock against NzbDrone and a non-starter for many people. Back when we started NzbDrone I don’t think it would have been as feasible as it is now because more and more libraries (that we use) support mono.
