The reason is that Sonnar is an ideal solution for ALL my TV Shows, not just ones from indexers. I’m using Plex and SAB. I would like Sonnar to have some option to download RSS/Podcast video feeds. This seems like a better solution than relying on Plex to manage RSS through a service like Zapier. While easy, it doesn’t produce the result of putting the show in my Plex TV category or sharing it with other users on the Plex server.
Some shows are so boring or small time that you can only get them on Podcasts and Youtube. News for example is impossible to reliably get via NZB. These are free and legal shows I’m talking about. It just make sense to use Sonnar to download all my TV. Podcasts are often easy and kind of non locked down medium compared to real streams… They might be low quality, but OH well. An option to download from podcast if indexer fails or vice versa would be awesome. You could make it a Series specific option. I just add a podcast server and prioritize the source. So… 0 podcast 1 nzb 2 torrent would download from podcast first, then nzb, then torrent
Even if you just had the option to download a wildcard file like *.m4v as a backup option to when Indexers can’t find the file… that would be super awesome.
If you could add YouTube support a lot of ppl would really like that too. The future is all about a much higher volume of media and more diverse audiences. People are going to be watching and listening to their private and small time ‘channels’ more and more. Getting more obscure media to people is going to be difficult with just indexers, usenet and torrent.
There is much less incentive to add these less demanded, but often necessary shows to indexes and servers. Even if it makes sense to push the shows to usenet and the indexer system do the job. That’s not happening and hasn’t been for decades. We should have a failover option that isn’t nzb or torrent, even if it’s just a scheduled HTTP file download with wildcard support and normal renaming.
These RSS and Podcast feeds are really pretty great and easy ways to get video that you didn’t have access to in your normal TV library. They are also widely supported and kind of get preferential treatment because Google and MS want to appeal to Apple users. Most of those feeds are just unprotected media being freely distributed and we don’t have a good way to download and rename them, most of them are in TVDB already. It’s kind of silly not to be using that resource. It’s also nice to leverage a legal/niche medium because it’s unlikely to rapidly go away. With more gadgets and the Internet Of Things a big push for the future I think we will see more and more free and open streams that you can universally grab data from outside of a webpage or app. Something like RSS or Podcasting is ideally simple and widely supported for getting distributing to all the new gadgets coming out.
Have I argued my case well enough or must I try more? Add a little HTTP podcast download engine for us, pretty please. YOU CAN DO IT!
